Where to Obtain Your Credit History
Credit histories are a fact of modern economic life. If you want a loan for a house or a car or the convenience of credit cards, someone is going to check your credit history. For this reason, it is critically important to verify on a regular basis that timely and accurate information is filed in your credit history.
To obtain a copy of your credit history, you must contact a credit bureau. The three credit bureaus that collect information about millions of American consumers are: TRW Information Services, based in Orange, California; Equifax Inc. in Atlanta; and Trans Union Corp., based in Chicago.
Credit bureaus acquire information about how you handle debt from department stores, banks and other lenders. When you apply for any type of loan, your would-be lender purchases information about your credit status from one or more of the credit bureaus.
Consumers should obtain credit histories from all three bureaus at the following addresses:
The industry's standard practice has been to provide a free copy to anyone who has been denied credit within the past 60 days, provided the person can furnish the bureau with a copy of the rejection letter. Otherwise, the cost per report can range from $2 to $16, depending on the bureau, your state of residence and whether the report is for an individual or a couple. TRW will furnish one free copy per year to each person.
