Is There Life After A Letter from The IRS?
A letter from the Internal Revenue Service often strikes terror in the hearts of taxpayers. While it may only be a simple request for clarification of information, your letter may also be a notice of tax audit. Those taxpayers who wonder what to do next, have affordable, knowledgeable, expert help available from their local Enrolled Agent.
National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) President Patricia Schmick, EA, advises taxpayers, "Don't panic. If your letter from the IRS is a request for additional information, you can quickly provide it. Even if you owe money, or have made a mistake on your tax return, whatever else you do, you should never ignore an IRS notice. Most notices include a deadline for response and IRS will expect to hear from you by that date."
NAEA advises taxpayers to engage an Enrolled Agent as their authorized representative to handle a notice or letter from the IRS. Stated Schmick "I write a letter and send along the appropriate documentation to the IRS. When necessary, I also follow up with the IRS if other questions arise. My client doesn't have to worry."
Tax laws are subject to change at any time.
